Roleplaying, to my mind, is not so much playing a piece
in a game as it is creating fiction. The storyteller and
the player(s) together weave a world, breathe life into
its people and give their vision as its soul. The result:
a story tapestry that bears rewards in proportion to its
authors' passion for it. What an amazing thing!
Story creation theory is a big focus of mine. Like many
roleplayers, my friends and I have discussed detailing a
metasystem - a gaming structure that is not at all
world-specific, where anything can be made to work with a
minimum of mechanics - or rather, a minimum of intrusion.
The story, world, and characters should be the focus, and
the mechanics must enable, but not get in the way.
A good read on storytelling in this style is the old Rolemaster Gamemaster Law. While
there is a lot of system-specific information, there is
also a solid overview of what it means to be a game master
and how to keep the game from getting in the way of the
story.
If you feel like reading war-stories <chuckle> here
are a few links to game materials, listed by my character's
name:
I'll also let you look at synopses of a few things for
which I was game master (or is that
mistress?).
